M.I.A. :: Up to mischief as usual

Filed under: Film,Music — Tags: Bad Girls, M.I.A, N.E.E.T, Sleigh Bells — Steph @ 3:09 pm February 6, 2012

A younger counterpart to the YBAs, M.I.A. is a medley of confidence, controversy and 21st century multi-media sensibilities, Ms Arulpragasam has always known how to get people talking – ‘Bad Girls’ isn’t any different.

Another collabo with director Romain Gavras, the video features middle eastern racing boys and girls performing car tricks and Hip-Hop dance routines in traditional dress. Visually stunning, from the tricks, styling and lighting to the dope x-ray style car.

Any artist that manages to get coverage from both The Wall Street Journal and Pitchfork on what they are about to do next is doing something right. M.I.A. understands the ‘what’s’ and ‘why’s’ of cultural relevance to markets, the media and the perception of being an innovative multi-media ‘artist’ and plays the right tune to get everyone moving. That’s not to say there isn’t artistry to what she does, but like Young British Artists before, M.I.A. is in the business of selling her vision.

Check out her label N.E.E.T (yep that’s right, the Not in Education Employment Training acronym) for epilepsy inducing graphics and a roster of artists including NY hipster-rockers Sleigh Bells.

Wes Anderson :: Moonrise Kingdom trailer

Filed under: Film — Tags: Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson — Ansel @ 12:48 pm January 18, 2012

Moonrise Kingdom looks set to deliver classic Wes Anderson. The hallmarks of Anderson’s work are as recognisable as they are hard to pin down. Few people celebrate the strange absurdities of human relationships like Wes, who looks to be in fine abstractive form. Keep your eyes peeled for a release date.

Aaron Ruell :: Director and Photograper

Filed under: Film,Photography — Tags: Aaron Ruell, Napoleon Dynamite — Ansel @ 5:31 pm November 8, 2011

Director, photographer and actor Aaron Ruell takes photographs like a man who directs film. He was responsible for the promotional photography and opening title sequences for the 2004 award winning cult movie Napoleon Dynamite, which he also starred in.

Ruell manages to capture a real sense of theatre and character; even within the confines of the seemingly bog standard portrait. Skill sets which are particularly handy if you’re an independent film maker trying to sell in your ideas to potential investors about films you might have in the pipeline.

iPhone 4 camera

Watching this film shot on the new iPhone 4 makes me wanna get an upgrade, now. The footage looks amazing with a lovely depth of field. I have a feeling that we’re going to see a lot of ‘iMovies’ coming our way soon.

How Bad Do You Want It

Filed under: Film — Tags: Giavanni Ruffin, Greyskale Multimedia LLC, How Bad Do You Want It — Ansel @ 1:58 pm October 21, 2011

“When you want to succeed as badly as you want to breathe; then you’ll be successful.”

Interesting video from Greyskale Multimedia featuring American footballer Giavanni Ruffin. I’d not heard of either Greyskale or Mr Ruffin but his story is a particularly interesting one.

Ruffin is a highly touted running back out of East Carolina University who went undrafted in this spring’s NFL draft. Rather than be discouraged when his name failed to show up on the NFL draft board, Ruffin has used the experience as added motivation in achieving his goal, with this video no doubt acting as a shop window to any perspective NFL teams.

Good sense makes sense, and this video is 5mins 50seconds of wisdom that permeates any field of interest because the message is simple: the secret to success is that there really is no secret.

Anstam :: Baldwin by Nikita von Teickenberg

Filed under: Film,Music — Tags: Anstam, Nikita von Teickenberg — Ansel @ 9:26 pm July 25, 2011

If there were any debate as to how much talent is required to make it in a very competitive world of creativity, the debate ends now.

Nikita von Teickenberg is a graphic design student from Hannover, studying at Fachhochschule Hannover (FHH), which is – you guessed it – Hannover Germany.

Nikita”s video for Anstam as part of a University project sets the standard for work ethic and execution. Plus it’s a liiiittle bit spooky, with references to The Grudge / The Ring to boot.

Africa Hitech :: Out In The Streets

Filed under: Film,Music — Tags: Africa Hitech, Out In The Streets, twenty%extra™ — Ansel @ 9:50 pm July 14, 2011

Out in the streets, people are doing more than shopping for new clothes and furniture. History has shown that democracy in action isn’t always pretty. Many are now realising that their democratic rights can’t be fought from the comfort of the living room sofa.

If there were a soundtrack to ‘conscientious uprising’, Africa Hitech’s ‘Out In The Streets’ would be it. At twenty%extra™ we created our own version of the video in response to the poignant chorus, which could literally be a soundtrack to our times. Spread the word.

Batman :: The Dark Knight Rises poster

Filed under: Design,Film — Tags: Batman, The Dark Knight Rises — Ansel @ 9:35 pm

I don’t know when in 2012 this film is coming out. Christian Bale aside, I don’t even know who’ll be starring in it. I do know however that this teaser poster is simply dope.

An image of anarchy and apocalypse depicted with such craft can only bode well for the film itself.

Dudley Perkins :: Flowers by Sam Craven

Filed under: Film,Music,News — Tags: Blake Claridge, Dudley Perkins, Samuel Craven, Stones Throw, Stones Throw Video Contest — Ansel @ 1:13 am July 2, 2011

Stones Throw are marketing geniuses. The Stones Throw Video Contest which launched back in April and ends today is proof of that.

Such is the nature of genius that it attracts, well, genius. Enter Samuel Craven with a final day entry that’s already got the attention of Mr Perkins himself.

Sam’s video for Flowers provides all the essential ingredients for a summer video: it’s beautiful, calming and uplifting and works in perfect harmony with the track. Sure I’m biased but it deserves your vote, or at least a play or two.

Samuel Craven :: Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf – Methods

Filed under: Film,Music — Tags: Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf, Methods, Samuel Craven, Stones Throw — Ansel @ 9:43 am June 15, 2011

Super Super8 video for Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf’s Methods, courtesy of our very own Samuel Craven.

Found during an endless trawl through Sam’s local flea market, the footage is unbelievably untouched and unedited. And that’s where the magic lies.

When heartfelt visuals combine with heartfelt music there’s a synergy for all to see. Spend the next 4 minutes checking out what that magic looks like.

Nick Mcqueen & Josh Walsh :: DIY camera track and dolly

Nick Mcqueen and Josh Walsh, two recent graduate from Camberwell College of Arts developed their own DIY camera track and dolly. Using skateboard wheels, mdf and a heap of planning, they manage to make a super sexy piece of grip equipment.

With their Graphic Design course now costing £9,000 a year, more and more students will likely be doing the same. SOZ GRIP HIRE COMPANIES.

Filed under: Events,Film,Politics — Tags: 2diceproductionz, Brazen Bunch, twenty%extra™, UpRise Anti-Racism Festival, UpRise TV — Ansel @ 1:48 am November 10, 2010

We came. We saw. We conquered. We got pretty damn wet. And with the help of Juliette Dalton and her 2diceproductionz team, pretty soon we’ll have the film to prove it.

Deadmau5 & Kaskade :: I Remember

Filed under: Fashion,Film,Marketing — Tags: Aston Kelly, Colin O'Toole, Deadmau5 & Kaskade, I Remember, Stephen Graham, Warren Brown, YO clothing — Ansel @ 1:16 pm July 28, 2010

Simply put, this is one of the strongest, most poignant music videos you’ll ever watch.

In fact to call it just a music video does it a disservice, but if you want something to do with 9mins 40seconds of your time, you could do no better than watching this.

Carpe diem.

Raising Victor Vargas

Filed under: Film — Tags: Peter Sollett, Raising Victor Vargas — Ansel @ 1:01 pm

The average coming-of-age film is generally thwart with drama at every turn and a look-at-me-look-at-me element that rarely deserve any attention at all.

So if you come across a largely slept on 2002 film full of character, subtlety and previously untapped performing talent, then you’ll have no doubt discovered what it was like Raising Victor Vargas.

Tron Legacy :: One day all films might be made this way

Filed under: Film,Gaming,Marketing — Tags: Digital Domain, Tron Legacy — Ansel @ 3:51 pm July 3, 2010

Picture the swanky but slightly chaotic scene. It’s the screenwriters strike of 2007. There’s no new product and no scriptwriters to make it. What to do? Dip into the archives of course, for a brand that was crying out for a remake.

So what next when you need the hard cash of major investors in order to bring the project to life? Well if you’ve got the iconic visual references of the original Tron to drawn on, you for-go the script and cut straight to the trailer.

Post production juggernauts Digital Domain did the honours, which in turn brought on the necessary brands and distributors to make things happen. Most tellingly from a marketing perspective was the simultaneous development of a Tron Legacy computer game, which if modern marketing trends count for anything, will probably outstrip the ridiculous revenue already promised by the film itself.

Not every brand will be able to try this at home, but it won’t be the last time we see this potential means of production.

Nike :: Write The Future

Three rolling street-side billboard ads with three tenuous uses of the Saint Georges flag can only mean one thing; it’s World Cup silly season.

All the things you need to prepare you for a summer of sporting activity, you know – chocolate bars, beer, fizzy drinks – have provided us with all the ad nauseum we need for the coming summer months.

And there’s the new spot from Nike. In truth you don’t need them either, but as usual they claim a credible position with an irrefutable life message.

The ads not bad either.
