Angelo Dundee :: Trainer of Champions

Filed under: News — Tags: Angelo Dundee — Ansel @ 12:01 pm February 3, 2012

Angelo Dundee – the legendary boxing trainer – died on February 1 aged 90. Even The Greatest need a great team in their corner. From the age of 18, Muhammad Ali had Dundee.

Dundee once reflect: “When you’re working with a fighter, you’re a surgeon, an engineer and a psychologist.” Dundee worked with 15 other world champions, which is an amazing statistic in itself. It certainly made for a lot ‘surgery’ and ‘engineering’.

Throughout years of political and social turmoil, Dundee fulfilled all these roles and more. His relationship with Ali never faltered, never wavered. “Through all those days of controversy, Angelo never got involved. He let me be exactly who I wanted to be and he was loyal. That is the reason I love Angelo.” More than even a man of great loyalty and dedication, Dundee was man of great character. Just some of the reasons why you should love him too.

Nigel Peake :: The Broken Camera Club

Filed under: News — Tags: Broken Camera Club, Nigel Peake — Ansel @ 7:52 pm November 30, 2011

Star Trek: Wagons in space. Fight Club: An office employee and a soap salesman build a global organization to help vent male aggression – The best moments in film stem from simple, compelling concepts.

The Broken Camera Club: 13 broken cameras and their downfall, illustrated by Nigel Peake. The cameras may have come to a sad end, but this booklet represents an idea worthy of a screenplay. Why? Because cameras by their vary usage are about stories. While the demise of these well illustrated beauties represent the end, an extension of the idea could take us back the beginning.

Zach Terrell :: Illustrator of Molar Bears

Filed under: News — Tags: Galaxy Tunes, Molar Bear, Space Melt, Zach Terrell — Ansel @ 10:19 pm November 14, 2011

I like the simplicity and quality of the work. I like the humour. I like the subtlety of the message. Say hello to Zach Terrell.

Galaxy Tunes speaks of the transformational quality of music (no matter the format). Space Melt is nice and abstract. Molar Bear is about Bears with very Molars. Duh.

Filed under: News — Tags: B. Bravo, Earnest Endeavours, Kiss 'n' Tell EP — Ansel @ 10:40 am October 25, 2011

Monday saw the release of B.Bravo‘s Kiss ‘n’ Tell EP on Earnest Endeavours. This is the first release on the Earnest Endeavours label and we’re a little bit excited by this for quite a few reasons;- 1) Because B.Bravo is dope and 2) Because…aah we’ll keep this as a surprise…

Reside in colder climates? Well in B. Bravo’s future funk world it’s strictly 82ºC California sunshine. Can you feel it.

Dudley Perkins :: Flowers by Sam Craven

Filed under: Film,Music,News — Tags: Blake Claridge, Dudley Perkins, Samuel Craven, Stones Throw, Stones Throw Video Contest — Ansel @ 1:13 am July 2, 2011

Stones Throw are marketing geniuses. The Stones Throw Video Contest which launched back in April and ends today is proof of that.

Such is the nature of genius that it attracts, well, genius. Enter Samuel Craven with a final day entry that’s already got the attention of Mr Perkins himself.

Sam’s video for Flowers provides all the essential ingredients for a summer video: it’s beautiful, calming and uplifting and works in perfect harmony with the track. Sure I’m biased but it deserves your vote, or at least a play or two.

Nike :: Glory Is Ours

Filed under: News — Tags: Glory Is Ours, Nike — Ansel @ 7:53 pm June 2, 2011

We may have got our a*ses kicked by Barcelona on the weekend, but I won’t let that get in the way of appreciating some good work.

Nike covered their bases with the Glory Is Ours poster / film campaign, in what for them can only be described as a win-win situation. The glory is theirs indeed.

Rebecca Black :: Friday

Filed under: Music,News,Viral — Tags: Rebecca Black — Samuel @ 6:09 pm March 18, 2011

This is Rebecca Black’s song, Friday, and it’s been gaining a million plus daily YouTube views this week. The song tells the story of an average Friday for Rebecca, full of fun fun fun and thirteen year olds driving convertible cars.

Justin Bieber has obviously inspired a lot of young people to try to become successful recording artists, however he’s also filled parents and record label owners eyes with pound / dollar signs who are now pushing enthusiastic children down that path regardless of their talent.

PhoneShop :: Starts tonight

Filed under: News — Tags: Channel 4OD, Phil Bowker, PhoneShop — Ansel @ 2:45 pm October 7, 2010

Phil Bowker’s already cult comedy PhoneShop begins tonight on E4. For the eager beavers, the show has been available to watch for a couple of weeks on 4oD with a sign-up process the only caveat.

When it comes to understanding the demographic make-up of such cutting edge programming, data capture like this is essential when trying to learn more about those learned early adopters.

Not to say I fall into that category, but I’ve already caught my initial slice of the pie. The verdict: a bright PhoneShop future starts today.

Newsnight with Russell Brand

Filed under: News,Politics — Tags: Jeremy Paxman, Newsnight, Russell Brand — Ansel @ 8:36 am October 6, 2010

The problem with mediated representation is that it’s invariably designed to benefit the traditional media outlet while rarely serving the interests of those allegedly represented.

It takes a clever person to invert that traditional process of representation, but a clever person Russell Brand most certainly is.

Madlib :: T-shirts galore

Filed under: News — Tags: Madlib — Ansel @ 6:14 pm August 31, 2010

Madlib is a man of many musical styles and even more pseudonyms.

He recognises though, that the power of his music is nothing without the brand to go with it. Being a savvy type of fellow he also knows you’ll be cold if you don’t have something nice to wear, hence why the man with many styles has many super fresh t-shirts.

Mayer Hawthorne :: I Left My Heart In San Francisco

Filed under: News — Tags: Huf, I Left My Heart In San Francisco, Mayer Hawthorne, Stones Throw, Tony Bennett — Ansel @ 1:25 pm August 13, 2010

Mayer Hawthorne on vocals – singing a Tony Bennett classic with beautifully art-directed video and merchandise to match – can only mean another collabo pack from the niche marketing hit-masters over at Stones Throw.

It’s hard not to disappear into the carefully crafted slowmos, but if that wasn’t enough, the track comes loaded on a heart-shaped USB flash drive, thus ensuring that as my heart leaves for sunnier climbs, my wallet also leaves my pocket.

Chuck Anderson :: No Pattern

Filed under: News — Tags: Chuck Anderson, Lodown Magazine, Lupe Fiasco, Microsoft — Ansel @ 6:47 pm August 8, 2010

Once upon a time, Chuck Anderson was an illustrator who did work for esoteric fashion brands and artists like Lupe Fiasco and Lodown Magazine.

Nowadays the brands get no bigger than Google and Microsoft, because when it comes to the type of slick signature styling that Chuck Anderson can bring, everyone wants a buy-in.

Carl Craig :: VERSUS

Filed under: News — Tags: Carl Craig, Francesco Tristano, François Xavier Roth, Les Siècles Orchestra — Ansel @ 6:07 pm August 5, 2010

Digging in the back catalogue of must-blogs we find legendary Detroit producer and king of Techno Carl Craig‘s 2009 collaborative concert with pianist Francesco Tristano and Paris’s Les Siècles Orchestra.

Musical Director and Conductor François Xavier Roth, when describing the project is quoted as saying “There is no hierarchy in music, only a quest for high standards.”

I can’t put it any better so I won’t say any more, apart from to say give it a try; you just might like it.

Bruce Haack :: Party Machine

Filed under: News — Tags: Bruce Haack, Party Machine, Stones Throw — Ansel @ 7:34 pm July 29, 2010

An image of the past combined with sounds of the future courtesy of music / marketing guru’s Stones Throw and Bruce Haack, who was not only widely considered as one of electronic music’s true pioneers, but was also a man in possession of the most unassuming of faces.

This is a video of simple teenage abandon with not an alcopop in sight – just coke cans on the table.
